Maintenance grants are available to help students with their costs of living during full time study; the local authorities in Ireland provide maintenance grants to students who are entering undergraduate or postgraduate education for the first time.
Only EU nationals who have resided in the relevant local authority since the 1st of October of the year previous to starting the course may apply.
Candidates for the maintenance grant must also undergo a means test, as your income must be below a certain level before the grant is awarded.
The following schemes provide maintenance grants to eligible students who are attending courses of further and higher education approved by the Department of Education and Science for the purposes of each of the following Schemes: –
- Higher Education Grants Scheme (HEG Scheme)
- Third Level Maintenance Grants Scheme for Trainees (TLT Scheme)
- Vocational Education Committees’ Scholarship Scheme (VEC Scheme)
- Maintenance Grants Scheme for Students attending European Social Fund-Aided Post Leaving Certificate Courses (PLC Scheme)
Higher Education Grants Scheme (HEG Scheme)
HEG Scheme covers full-time undergraduate courses of not less than two years duration pursued in the university/IOT Sector or third-level institution, which is maintained or assisted by recurrent grants from public funds in Ireland and other E.U. Member States (with certain exceptions). The HEG Scheme also covers approved full-time postgraduate courses of at least one years duration pursued in colleges/institutes approved for the purposes of the Scheme. (Grant assistance is not paid in respect of postgraduate study outside of Ireland).
Third Level Maintenance Grants Scheme for Trainees (TLT Scheme)
TLT Scheme covers two year National Certificate and three-year National Diploma courses, pursued in the Institutes of Technology (IOT’s).
Vocational Education Committees’ Scholarship Scheme (VEC Scheme)
VEC Scheme generally caters for students who hold a National Certificate or National Diploma (gained from attendance at courses covered under the TLT Scheme) and are progressing to approved degree courses in third level Institutions, including Universities. It also caters for students pursuing degree courses in Institutes of Technology, students pursuing Higher National Diploma courses in Northern Ireland, students progressing to approved degree courses in Northern Ireland, students progressing to approved degree courses in third-level Institutions in other EU member States and students pursuing post-graduate courses in Ireland.
Maintenance Grants Scheme for Students attending European Social Fund-Aided Post Leaving Certificate Courses (PLC Scheme)
PLC Scheme covers approved Post Leaving Certificate courses of at least one-year duration run in approved PLC Centres throughout the country.Grants are not paid in respect of attendance at part-time and evening courses.
