English language/Bridging Programme
WIT offers a Foundation Course for International Postgraduate Students whose first language is not English. This course involves a strong foundation in English, and IELTS preparation. The duration of the programme is 8 months; January to August, and September to May.
WIT delivers courses with a vocational focus at degree, sub-degree and postgraduate levels. Undergraduate courses are available at Higher Certificate (2 years), Degree (3 years) and Honours Degree (4 years) levels. WIT also offers postgraduate programmes upto PhD level.
In addition to these programmes, WIT can offer customised Summer Schools and Year or Semester abroad programmes.
WIT offers courses in business studies, computing and information technology, laboratory and field sciences, engineering, humanities and health sciences. The School of Humanities offers courses in hospitality management in addition to the traditional fields of arts, music and law. Our School of Engineering offers courses in architecture, architectural technology and construction management in addition to electronic, civil, mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
Research at WIT
Because of its important role in the development of the South East region of Ireland, WIT has a strong focus on research and innovation. It has been extremely successful in attracting external research funding from national agencies, industry and commerce and the European Union research programmes. The flagship research centre in WIT is the Telecommunications Software and Systems Group which undertakes world class research and hosts a significant number of visiting professors, postdoctoral scholars and postgraduate students.
Waterford is Ireland’s fifth city with a population of approximately 60,000. Located 100 miles South of Dublin, It is the capital of the South East region. The region is one of the most beautiful in Ireland with mountains, rivers and a long coastline. There are excellent facilities for outdoor sports and activities and it has a vibrant social life. The quality of life here is better than in large cities and the cost of living in lower. The city is very safe for students and the environment is clean and healthy. Waterford people are also very welcoming to overseas students.
There are many active student clubs and societies within the Institute to cater for all hobbies and interests, including some dedicated to the interests of international students. In addition, we have extensive student support services, and are particularly sensitive to the special needs of overseas students. Our international office staff advise and help on all student issues and concerns.
We provide excellent apartment-style accommodation for all our students on or near the campus. These have single or double study bedrooms and en suite bathrooms, with shared kitchen and living room. All apartments are fully furnished and equipped, and heating and electricity included. In cases where students desire private accommodation, WIT’s Accommodation Office will provide assistance. The Institute does not offer homestay accommodation.
Cost of Living
These are just guidelines and vary with inflation and your chosen life style. In general, the cost of living in Waterford is much lower than in the capital city, Dublin. You will probably need around €6000 for the academic year in addition to tuition fees and other academic costs such as books. Please visit our website for a breakdown of costs.
The academic year at WIT starts in early September for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses. The Bridging course for international students commences in September, January and June. Direct applications should be made to the International Office by the end of May for September entry. Application for January (Bridging Studies) should be made by the end of October.
To enter an undergraduate programme applicants should have grades of + 60% in their High School Diploma, and IELTS score of 5.5 for science and engineering programmes, and an IELTS score of 6.0 for business and humanities programmes.
For postgraduate study, a good undergraduate degree in an related area of study, and an IELTS of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 650 is required.
To enter a bridging course, applicants should have a High School Diploma and IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.
WIT will consider advanced entry with recognition of credit obtained from previous university level study, provided full, authenticated and correct transcripts are provided.
Not all students with the minimum requirements will be offered places due to strong competition for places at WIT from both national and international students.
Its is WIT’s policy to maintain its fees at the lowest possible level so that good international students should not be deterred on financial grounds. The fees per annum at WIT are as follows:
€5750 for Bridging Studies
€7950 for Undergraduate courses
€9250 for postgraduate courses
This fee includes tuition, capitation and examination fees.
